'this garden has certainly got the wow factor, it's a highly designed space but it still fits in the landscape so comfortably,
it's as if it's always been there' - Joe Swift, TV Gardeners World
Since then Follers Manor Garden has featured on Channel 4ʼs Landscape Man with Matthew Wilson, a spot on Gardeners World with Joe Swift and in 2015 on ITV's Alan Titchmarsh's Britains Best Back Gardens. It has been in numerous publications (as far a field as Shanghai) and included in the 2015 July issue of the RHS magazine and has won several awards for its stunning landscaping within the South Downs National Park. When Ian began, he was essentially working with a blank canvas from which he derived his unique ideas and unique they are! He told us that the new garden needed a powerful identity to compete with the imposing house elevation and the remarkable surrounding backdrop.
One of the key design features is the sunken garden which provides enclosure and intimacy within the setting and simultaneously allows one to admire the breathtaking views while avoiding any wind. The herbaceous displays on the south slopes along with the pond and its deck walk encourage wildlife. The finishing touches are the brush strokes of hawthorn hedging throughout the garden which both hide and reveal the gardens components. Later additions include the meadows, inner courtyard, spring garden, woodland walk and drive.
Finally, in December 2012, 500 trees were planted in conjunction with the Woodland Trust through their MOREwoods scheme, on that occasion to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee.
